East Greenwich School Committee

Melissa Larsen

Like many, Melissa moved to East Greenwich with her daughter Ana for one reason, the schools. Melissa is proudly running as a Democrat for School Committee to ensure our schools stay competitive to ensure our children have the foundation for success in college and beyond.

Melissa is a lifelong Rhode Islander and practicing attorney who hopes to bring her 25+ years of legal experience to the school committee. Melissa is a former Rhode Island state prosecutor (2003-2010), Cranston Municipal Court judge (2017-2021) and solicitor for the Town of Narragansett (2020-2021). Melissa is an active member of the Rhode Island’s legal community. She is a member of the Rhode Island Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (2011- present), Rhode Island Bar Association Criminal Law Bench Bar Committee (2011- present)(Chair of Committee, 2019-2021) and the Rhode Island Bar Association Family Law Committee (2018- present). Melissa was honored to serve on the Local Rules Committee for United States District Court, District of Rhode Island, (2016 – 2021) and the Access to Justice Committee for the United States District Court, District of Rhode Island (2019 – 2021). Melissa is currently in private practice, practicing primarily in the areas of criminal defense and family law.

If elected, Melissa’s focus will be on the $150M bond and building new school(s) and improving the infrastructure of our existing schools. With the $150M bond approved by voters last November, East Greenwich has an incredible opportunity to build/renovate schools that will last for generations. It is imperative that this project be done right and is mindful of the neighboring homes. Melissa will also focus on school safety. Melissa shares all your concerns as terrified parents every time there is news of another school shooting. Melissa’s goal will be to ensure every reasonable safety precaution is in place and operational in all East Greenwich Schools. Melissa will work to make sure resources are available to meet the needs of all of our students. Finally, Melissa will focus on expanding enrichment programs offered in the district, with a focus on STEM so our students have the skills to succeed in today’s world. As a single parent, Melissa knows some of the issues facing single parents and how key good communication is.

Melissa is looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible and hearing your opinions about the future of our schools during the election season and beyond. You can contact her at larsen4EGSC@gmail.com
